Stress, The Adrenal Glands & Thyroid Function

There is a clear link between stress and digestion but also between stress and thyroid dysfunction*. When the body is under physiological or psychological stress the adrenal glands increase stress hormone production. This is appropriate in short-term stress situations, but if the stress continues long term this can cause digestive problems taht - in the long term - may lead act as a trigger for autoimmune conditions in susecptible individuals (those with a genetic predisposition).  For more on this

Some autoimmune conditions directly affect the adrenal glands, specifically the autoimmune version of Addison's Disease (low cortisol production). This is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening disease if untreated. Some believe prolonged stress may lead to 'adrenal fatigue'** or 'hypoadrenosis' although this is not widely accepted within the medical community. At WH360 we believe actively managing stress, providing proper nutrition when under stress and getting plenty of rest (listening to your body!) are crucial in any recovery plan.
